All Bundled Up In My Cowl.

Monday, January 3, 2011

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Years! For many of us, including myself, it's back to reality which means no more sleeping in and back to work.  Did I hear a "boo?" Yes, I thought so.

Anyways, ever since I saw a beautiful cowl on Sydney from The Daybook I knew I had to have my own.  I was going to buy one but then I thought to myself "hmmm, I could probably do this myself!" So guess what? I did! While it was a bit of a challenge, it was nonetheless a success (in my mind at least). While it is a bit too heavy for Florida weather, it is perfect for a cold winter up north.  I wore it in New York this past week and it kept me so nice and warm!  I self-taught myself how to do the basic knit stitch from a series of YouTube videos.  The hardest part was starting off since it felt a bit awkward holding the needles in my hands.  In no time, I was knitting away and getting faster by the minute.  This is my first knitted item and I cannot wait to learn more complicated stitches.  Kelly got started on her first cowl too!

OMGOODNESS!!! When I first saw this I thought "that's probably the one I wanted from JCrew" but no, you stepped it up a notch and made it yourself. AWESOME! I feel inspired

I just started knitting as of this week and am completely addicted. I learned from my grandmother and can't wait to see her again so that I can show her my progress (which is slow but steady...)

I am making a scarf and am wondering if it'll be easy to turn into a cowl. I only have about eight inches done, and I'm already ready for the next project. So instead of a 3 foot scarf, I wanted to do something shorter. Do you think it'll be easy to turn my project into a cowl?

Hi Amanda! I'm so glad to hear you are knitting! My cowl loops twice around my neck and is 22 stitches wide and a little more than 5 feet long--you may be able to do just a single loop around your neck that is 3 feet. Another, easier project I wanted to start on was a knitted headband that goes over the ears. Just an idea! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Hey Lynn! Thanks for your supperrr nice comment! That is actually Kelly in the photo (I made her be my model haha) but those are in fact her real lashes. I'll definitely have to get Kelly to post her cowl! :)

I love a good cowl! They are pretty big in Europe, or else I would be motivated to make one myself. I think there's something so special from a homemade piece of clothing/jewelry/anything... even if it's not perfect!

Kudos to you for making your own! I think the remnants from my first attempt at making a scarf when I was 8 years old are still sitting in a terrible knot in my parent's basement... :)

I'm so impressed, Kristen! I bought a cream-colored one from Gap that looks a lot like yours, but of course it was made in a factory. New goal for 2011: learn to crochet!
